Situated in the prominent Rajbagh district of Srinagar, AL Habib Emporio is a commercial development that reflects the refined application of Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) to achieve a façade that is both architecturally expressive and structurally efficient. Designed by Modarch India for Mr. Gulzar Shaikh and completed in December 2022, the project demonstrates how customized GRC elements can be used to introduce classical architectural character while maintaining the advantages of lightweight façade components.
The façade design integrates a variety of decorative and structural GRC components, including full-round columns, detailed mouldings, brackets, window profiles, and intricate jali panels. These elements collectively shape the building’s architectural identity, introducing depth, rhythm, and shadow play across the elevations.
One of the defining features of the project is the installation of approximately 5,800 sq. ft. of GRC jali modules, strategically placed across multiple elevations. These panels not only enhance the visual richness of the façade but also contribute to functional shading and ventilation—important considerations for buildings in the climatic context of Srinagar.
In addition to the jali work, the project incorporates custom-fabricated columns of varying heights, extending from the ground floor to the terrace level. These columns are complemented by decorative brackets and moulding profiles that frame the façade elements, accentuate the entrance areas, and create a consistent architectural language across the structure.
Extensive moulding work was executed along parapets, column bases, windows, and entrance curves, reinforcing the classical architectural vocabulary of the building. Each component was fabricated to precise dimensions to ensure seamless integration during installation.
